I too found this very interesting. Why can Paul attend Synagogues and comment and preach the gospel. Why are so many asleep in the pews. Why is Christianity asleep while so alive in places like Africa or China where it dose not follow the Greek model.

I think in America there is a love of the English who being a colony of the Greeks in by gone days venerated the Greeks.

In the old days Greek philosophers traveled from town to town speaking before audiences. They carried on the tradition that I think came from there academies.

I corinthians 14:26 "How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification." ( New King James version )

This is an extreemly important verse that reveals Paul's thought concerning church meetings in his day. The thought and practice of todays christianity where all come regularly to a church service to hear the word of an ordained preacher is absolutely contrary to the revelation of the New Testiment. It is a practice that has grown out of centuries of man's(not God's) organization of what was once the wonderful move of God on this earth through those who were walkling and livng in union with the Spirit of God.
This does not mean that the teaching and ministry of God's word is not needed in the church today. But the thought and practice that "You can all prophesy one by one" in verse 31 of the same chapter is largely ignored in todays Christian church. The functioning of all the members of the body of Christ has mostly been replaced by the clergy. Yet there are remnants of a functioning body of Christ scattered throughout the globe.
I hope that the practice of the early church may become more widely spread and known that "all may learn and all may be encouraged."

SORRY TOMMO Must disagree!

I hit ur above link and had a geeze (Aussie talk). Amidst a lotta good stuff I found lot of rattling on about Greek Philosophy and worldly thinking being our much needed 'Friend' who saved our struggling religion...but 'Stayed Too Long.'
Dude, a 'Friend' that hangs around and eats your kids was never a 'Friend' in the first place. Nowhere in Scripture will you find Jesus exhorting His disciples to 'think like the world and imitate their brilliance but only enough so that you don't get infected'! We are exhorted rather to shun idle babblings and empty philosophy. BE YE NOT CONFORMED TO THE WORLD! (Rom 12).
For centuries we've been trying to 'have our cake and eat it too'. Do everything the way the godless are doing it but then turn around and expect God to back it all up with his power. WELL IT WON"T WORK!
Worldly philosophy is not a 'Friend', in large portion or in small. Carnal thinking is Death and 'leaven', set as a snare to corrupt us to our innermost parts.
Not sure I like where you're going with the bash against 'Surrogate Spiritualities' either...however an amazing use of alliteration!!! I love to see tantalizing teachings that sooth the soul with the sassy sensuality of a Shakespearean sonnet!

Congratulations on the discovery of Hatch's book. This is very important stuff! Before reading his comments, I was trying to write about the same thing. See "The Friend That Stayed Too Long"--about half way through: "A Seldom Told Story" http://www.futurechurch.net/archives_view.asp?articleid=59

Keep up the good work.

Ain't it good 2 discover lads were saying this stuff 120 years ago!

The Spirit of Reformation has been alive and kicking since way before we were all so deeply corrupted. Ever present, seizing whatever witness was available to lead us into all Truth. Unto the "restoration of all things".
If Abraham could rescue Lot from the captivity of the worldly kings, I think it's high time Spirit-led men rescued the Christian Church from itself!

Any leads on where we can locate some more Edwin Hatch?
