What are you Looking to?

By Tom Sparks at

Tom Sparks is a seasoned leader, a profound teacher, a humble servant and a champion of a bloke. He is one of few leaders that I believe to be all-out open and obedient to God in this reformation that is upon us. This brief word is one of his weekly meditations from his site www.khtmin.org. I encourage you to go there and check out his articles and audio teachings and subscribe to the ‘weekly inspiration’.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)

Oh man…this can’t be true can it? I mean don’t we frequently lean on the natural, man made, human resources and solutions, and then if they fail we cry out to God? We REALLY need to let His words sink in. “No Avail” means worthless, useless, and ineffective. I don’t know about you, but I think He’s probably right, and if so we would really do better to stop, ponder, and ask ourselves frequently “Where am I trying to derive life strength and meaning from?”

Our world would focus us on everything material and physical because that is all it has to offer, but our greatest needs cannot be met through these things. We need SPIRIT and we need LIFE. Having been born again I’ve been given an inner apparatus that can now source life in a place 100% beyond the reach of those not born again. If this is so then while I must live in a natural/flesh oriented world I’d better learn to access spirit and life and know when I am and when I’m not. Otherwise I can look and sound really religious but experience next to nothing of the riches that are in Christ. This is why many Christians fail to enjoy what they have in Him. For sure Jesus was talking about Judas here, but it is also clear He was speaking way beyond just to him. I don’t want to be an unbelieving believer…

Paul says it so well, but I warn you…it is not a comfortable statement:

2 Timothy 3:5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

I have been more blessed the past two years than all the other years of my life. My material riches are
adequate but my spiritual riches have made me
wealthy. I’m retired so I’m able to study, read,
and listen to all sources of the Holy Bible. While
I know I was born-again 20 years ago, just lately have
I known the Holy Spirit personally at a deep level.
Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior and I’m living
the joy and contentment that only a child of God
can have. I study the Scriptures 3-4 hours a day,
and enjoy it more every day. I’m so fortunate that
God has brought me into His family, now and for
    eternity. Praise God!

comprimise is a subtle little devil. As a man with a young family i have found the responsibilities of a husband and father have caused me to take up my confidence in the flesh. little by little the gospel has been pushed aside to make way for what needs to be done to provide for my family.
over the last two years my spiritual regression can be likened to a landslide. first one rock, then a clump of dirt here and there leading to what feels like is about to become an all out avalanche. where i once was set apart to the word and prayer, confident the Lord will make provision for my needs, i have found myself to be striving in the flesh trusting only in my own ability to work hard enough to make ends meet.
i guess my point is this, the flesh is of no avail, the Spirit of God is the only thing that brings peace and fulfillment. to try and moderate Jesus in your life
only gives way to comprimise and the flesh.
as for me and my houshold we will serve the Lord.
