THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST - From Commencement to Completion (video series)- Chapter 1, Messianic Kingdom Prophecies Part 2
by Brett Jacobsen
The focus of this teaching is to promote the biblical truth that Christ’s Kingdom is active and increasing right now on this earth, in this age. Erroneous eschatology has detracted from this truth in many circles of the Christian faith.
All of the major eschatological (study of how things end) passages are covered but the end of the world is not the important issue and true eschatology is merely a means to an end- Christ Himself as King of kings. Though we will look at the glorious end of earthly history from time to time, we will more so continually use the scriptures to interpret the scriptures and arrive at the present victorious Kingdom of Christ.
For most Christians this teaching will challenge you deeply in your understanding of the New Covenant and Christ’s Kingdom as well as liberate you greatly in the truth of His Word.
Messianic Kingdom Prophecies Part 2
Below are the scriptures in this teaching so you can read along:
*Jesus the ensign in God’s holy mountain
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; 3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears [John 5:19 “The Son can do nothing of himself”]: 4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked [Rev 19:15]. 5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins [Rev 19:11]. 6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. 10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek [Gen 49:10]: and his rest [Heb 4:1-11] shall be glorious. 11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people [Acts 2:5, 22, 36-41], which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. 12 And he shall set up an ensign [v 10 ensign is Jesus] for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah [1] from the four corners of the earth. (Is 11:1-12)
[1] This must be the early church because when the temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. all of Israel’s genealogical records were also destroyed. Again Acts 2:5, 22, 36-41 seems to be the fulfilment (at least the beginning thereof).
*The arm of the Lord shall rule for Him
The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God [Matt 3:1-3 John the Baptist]. 4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: 5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed [John 1:6-14 “we beheld his glory”], and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it. 6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7 The grass withers, the flower fades: because the spirit of the LORD blows upon it: surely the people is grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. 9 O Zion, that brings good tidings, get you up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that brings good tidings, lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God! 10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his [zerowa] arm shall rule for him [Is 53 “the arm of the Lord”]: behold, his reward is with him [Rev 22:12], and his work before him. 11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd [John 10:11, 14]: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. (Is 40:3-11)
*God’s elect servant- a light to the Gentiles
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law [Jas 1, Rom 8]. 5 This says God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which comes out of it; he that gives breath to the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the LORD have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and give you for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. (Is 42:1-7)
But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; 16 And charged them that they should not make him known: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles. 19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. 21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. (Matt 12:15-21)
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. (John 9:5)
You are the light of the world… (Matt 5:14)
*Restorer of Israel’s preserved and light to the Gentiles
Listen, O isles, to me; and hearken, you people, from far; The LORD has called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother has he made mention of my name. 2 And he has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand has he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver has he hid me; 3 And said to me, You are my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified. 4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God. 5 And now, says the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength. 6 And he said, It is a light thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the Gentiles [Is 42:6], that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth. 7 This says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despises [Is 53:3], to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose you. 8 This says the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard you, and in a day of salvation have I helped you: and I will preserve you, and give you for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; 9 That you may say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. 10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that has mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. 11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted. 12 Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim. 13 Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD has comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. (Is 49:1-13)
*We will look at Is 61:1-11 in the next chapter.
*A reigning King shall prosper
Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Jer 23:5-6)
The Jews expectation of a continuance in the Messianic age
Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die. 34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abides [meno- remain] for ever [aion- age, time period]: and how say you, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? (John 12:31-34)
They knew from the scriptures that when Christ came He would continue for the age of His Kingdom. They were correct in their expectation but wrong in their assumption that Christ would reign on earth [ge] rather than celestially.
*The mountain/Kingdom which will cover the earth
You, O king, saw, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and the form thereof was terrible. 32 This image’s head was of fine gold [Nebuchadnezzar v38], his breast and his arms of silver [Medo-Persian v39], his belly and his thighs of brass [Greece v39], 33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay [Rome v40-43]. 34 You saw till that a stone was cut out without hands [Jesus], which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay [Rome], and broke them to pieces. 35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone [Jesus] that smote the image became a great mountain [Kingdom], and filled the whole earth. (Dan 2:31-35)
Daniel explains the fifth kingdom, the stone/mountain:
And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. (v 44-45)
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world [kosmos]: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from here. 37 Pilate therefore said to him, Are you a king then? Jesus answered, you say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice. (John 18:36-37)
But now, what did the most elevate them in undertaking this war, was an ambiguous oracle that was also found in their sacred writings, how, “about that time, one from their country should become governor of the habitable earth.” (The Wars of the Jews Josephus vi:5:4)
Although Josephus supposed this to be fulfilled in Vespasian it is clear that Messiah was to rule the world and that “about that time” spoke of the season when Rome (the legs and feet) had been ruling.
