THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST - From Commencement to Completion (video series)- Chapter 4, Jesus Prophesies the Tribulation Part 4

by Brett Jacobsen
The focus of this teaching is to promote the biblical truth that Christ’s Kingdom is active and increasing right now on this earth, in this age. Erroneous eschatology has detracted from this truth in many circles of the Christian faith.
All of the major eschatological (study of how things end) passages are covered but the end of the world is not the important issue and true eschatology is merely a means to an end- Christ Himself as King of kings. Though we will look at the glorious end of earthly history from time to time, we will more so continually use the scriptures to interpret the scriptures and arrive at the present victorious Kingdom of Christ.
For most Christians this teaching will challenge you deeply in your understanding of the New Covenant and Christ’s Kingdom as well as liberate you greatly in the truth of His Word.
The Olivet Discourse- The Great Tribulation Part 3
Below are the scriptures that are in this teaching so you can read along:
*Coming of the Son/powers of the heaven shaken
Lead up to this verse- “if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not” “if they shall say to you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not” Because it would not be a physical coming.
For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. 29 Immediately after the tribulation [thlipsis] of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken [1.]: 30 And then shall appear the sign [semeion- miracle. Like v3] of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes [phule] of the earth [ge- land] mourn [2.], and they shall see the Son of man coming [erchomai- Rev 22] in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory [3.]. (Matt 24:27-30)
But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, 25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. 26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. (Mark 13:24-26)
And there shall be signs [semeion- Matt 24:3, 30] in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming [eperchomai] on the earth [oikoumene- land, spec. the Roman Empire]: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws nigh. (Luke 21:25-28)
[1.] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: [Rev 6:12-14 sixth seal, sun and moon] 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Acts 2:16-21)
Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie to David. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah. (Ps 89:35-37)
Is 13:1-11, Ezek 32:1-9, Joel 3:13-16…
[2.] And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. (Zech 12:10)
Behold, he comes with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds [phule- tribe, race, clan] of the earth [ge] shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. (Rev 1:7)
[3.] Verily I say to you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. (Matt 16:28)
- Matt 26:62-64, Rev 1:7
*Gathering the elect
And he shall send his angels [aggelos- messenger] with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Matt 24:31)
And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. (Mark 13:27)
And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like to the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in your sickle, and reap: for the time is come for you to reap; for the harvest of the earth [ge] is ripe. 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth [ge]; and the earth [ge] was reaped. (Rev 14:14-16)
Revelations white horse army…
*Jesus’ generation to see all these things
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer [time of Kingdom blessing] is near [eggus]: 33 So likewise YOU, when YOU shall see all these things, know that it [summer] is near, even at the doors. 34 Truly I say to you, This [houtos] generation [genea] shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled [ginomai- happen]. 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. (Matt 24:32-35)
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near: 29 So you in like manner, when you shall see these things come to pass, know that it is near, even at the doors. 30 Truly I say to you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. 31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. (Mark 13:28-31)
And he spoke to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; 30 When they now shoot forth, you see and know of your own selves that summer is now near at hand. 31 So likewise you, when you see these things come to pass, know you that the kingdom of God is near [eggus- ready, near, at hand] at hand [eggus]. 32 Truly I say to you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. 33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. (Luke 21:29-33)
*As in Noah’s day
But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood [70 A.D. flood] they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark [flee to Pella], 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (Matt 24:36-39)
He hasn’t changed subject, He is still referring to His coming in judgement and reaping the righteous remnant. His point is that He will come when people other than the Kingdom people will not be ready. The saints will be ready because Jesus taught this message to forewarn them.
*Be ready, watch, He’s coming
Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken [v31 – gather elect], and the other left [in Jerusalem/desolation]. 41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42 Watch therefore: for you know not what hour [1] your Lord does come [erchomai]. 43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44 Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes. 45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. 47 Truly I say to you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. 48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming [2]; 49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; 50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, 51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matt 24:40-51)
But of that day and that hour knows no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. 33 Take you heed, watch and pray: for you know not when the time is. 34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. 35 Watch you therefore: for you know not when the master of the house comes, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: 36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you I say to all, Watch. (Mark 13:32-37)
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting [debauch/hangover], and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. 35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch you therefore, and pray always, that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. (Luke 21:34-36)
[1] Eusebius speaking of the time after the crucifixion when Pilate placed the images of Caesar (signa) in Jerusalem said:
“from then on the city and all Judaea were in the grip of faction, war, and an endless succession of criminal plots, until the final hour overtook them – the siege under Vespasian. Such was the penalty laid upon the Jews by divine justice for their crimes against Christ.” (Eusebius- The History of the Church p 80)
[2] 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come [erchomai- accompany, appear] in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, [Matt 24:10-12, 2 Tim 3:1-4, Jas 5:5/1-8] 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming [parousia- being near, presence]? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. [v4 “the promise of His coming”] [“longsuffering” to give that generation a good chance to repent] 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night… [1 Thess 5:1-6] (2 Pet 3:3-4, 9-10)
