THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST - From Commencement to Completion (video series)- Chapter 6, Revealing the Annointed King Part 16

by Brett Jacobsen

The focus of this teaching is to promote the biblical truth that Christ’s Kingdom is active and increasing right now on this earth, in this age. Erroneous eschatology has detracted from this truth in many circles of the Christian faith.

All of the major eschatological (study of how things end) passages are covered but the end of the world is not the important issue and true eschatology is merely a means to an end- Christ Himself as King of kings. Though we will look at the glorious end of earthly history from time to time, we will more so continually use the scriptures to interpret the scriptures and arrive at the present victorious Kingdom of Christ.

For most Christians this teaching will challenge you deeply in your understanding of the New Covenant and Christ’s Kingdom as well as liberate you greatly in the truth of His Word.

Revelation chapter 16

Below are the notes from this teaching so you can read along:

Chapter 16:1

16:1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth [ge- land (of Israel)].

* great voice – “a great voice, as of a trumpet” (1:10) It is Jesus who commands the angels to “pour out the vials of the wrath of God”.

- In 15:5 the temple was open to testify against the apostates; here we see God commanding from the temple that the recompense of that witness be poured out on the land of Israel (which has been cleared of covenant people).

* verse 6 again verifies the predominant use of ge in Revelation as the land of Israel/Jerusalem as it was them who “shed the blood of saints and prophets”.

Chapter 16:2

2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth [ge]; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

- “upon the land [ge]” = Israel/Jerusalem

- Egypt’s sixth plague: boils (Ex 9:8-12)

- First trumpet – on the land, third of trees n grass scorched (Rev 8:7)

The LORD will smite you with the botch [ulcer, boil] of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof you can not be healed. (Deut 28:27)

- “the mark” – allegiance. “his image” - eikon, i-kone – statue, resemblance

Chapter 16:3

3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man; and every living soul died in the sea.

Sea = a multitude when not named. The sea/multitude of apostates.

- Egypt’s first plague = bloody waters (Ex 7:17-21)

- Second trumpet – On the sea, third blood, third creatures die, third ships destroyed (Rev 8:8-9)

- Josephus’ account of the great tribulation also tells of a few occasions where bodies of water were stained with blood and littered with bodies.

Chapter 16:4-7

4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. [1]

5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, You are righteous, O Lord, which are, and was, and shall be, because you have judged thus.

6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink; for they are worthy [axios- deserving] [2].

7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are your judgments.

[1] Egypt’s first plague = bloody waters (Ex 7:17-21)

- Third trumpet – on rivers, third water wormwood (Rev 8:10-11)

[2] “the blood of saints and prophets” – Jews (2 Chron 36:15-16, Acts 7:51-52, Matt 23:29-38, Rev 17:5-6, 18:24, Luke 13:33)

- Also, partially the Romans who physically shed blood of saints and themselves were present in the land (ge) while this carnage was happening (more in verse 10).

Chapter 16:8-9

8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given to him to scorch men with fire.

9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which has power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

- Perhaps a reverse of Egypt’s ninth plague = darkness (Ex 10:21-23)

- Sodom and Gom**************************************************

- Fourth trumpet- third of sun, moon & stars – darkness (Rev 8:12)

Also, fire from heaven on God’s enemies…???

- if the peeps of sod and Gom they would have repented…

- Remember, it was “God, which has power over these plagues”

Chapter 16:10-11

10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat [thronos- a stately seat, a potentate] of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness [1]; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. [2]

[1] Egypt’s ninth plague = darkness (Ex 10:21-23) eighth plague = locusts (Ex 10:4-20)

- Fifth trumpet – locust/demon plague (Rev 9:1-12)

- The throne of the beast – kingdom darkened = kingdom upheaval and tearing down leaders (like sun, moon, stars falling from sky). The Beast’s kingdom (which the apostates put their hope in) is now darkened.

- Nero’s suicide (June 68), the consequent wars and riots, the year of the four emperors- Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian.

[2] “They”, the apostate Jews, “gnawed their tongues for pain” as this also was a judgment against them- it prolonged the tribulation and pain cause they “repented not”.

Chapter 16:12-16

12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. [1]

13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. [2]

14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth to the kings of the earth [ge] and of the whole world [oikoumene- the Empire] [3], to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. [4]

15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. [5]

16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. [6]

- Egypt’s second plague = invasion of frogs from the river (Ex 8:2-4) This plague causes an invasion from the river; it is armies moved by frog demons.

- Sixth trumpet – four angels at Euphrates, 200 000 000 army, kill third of man (Rev 9:13-21)

[1] “the water thereof was dried up” – reverse of the Red Sea and Jordan.

- “The way of the kings of the East” – Euphrates was north of Israel, armies would invade from there. Many of Titus’ troops did invade Jerusalem from there.

[2] The devil, the Roman rulers and the Israelite leaders cause demons to go forth to prepare what God has ordained. (Also, Egypt’s frog plague)

[3] Again, ge is contrasted with oikoumene – kings of the land and of the whole Imperial world.

[4] The frog demons go to “gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty” – “Howl you; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.” (Is 13:6)

[5] Thief – watch – day of the Lord – destruction:

But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42 Watch therefore: for you know not what hour your Lord does come. 43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44 Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man comes. (Matt 24:36-44)

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I write to you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. (1 Thess 5:1-5)

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (2 Pet 3:10)

[6] Literal = Har-Megiddon = Mount Megiddo. Megiddo is a city on a plane. Nearest Mt is Carmel.

- “One can only suppose that St. John wants to refer to Megiddo and to Carmel in one breath” (Austin Farrer)

- Carmel – Elijah slays the false prophets (1 Kin 18)

- Megiddo – several Biblical battles-

A conquest of Joshua (Josh 12:21)

Deborah defeated the kings of Canaan (Jud 5:19)

Evil king Ahaziah died there (2 Kin 9:27)

Josiah defies God and fights against Egyptian Pharaoh Neco and is mortally wounded there (2 Chron 35:20-25)

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 11 In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. (Zech 12:10-11)

Chapter 16:17-21

17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done [ginomai]. [1]

18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. [2]

19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. [3]

20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. [4]

- Egypt’s seventh plague = hail (Ex 9:18-26) v 21 here we see “hail out of heaven”.

- Seventh trumpet – “the kingdoms of this world have become…”, earthquake, hailstorm(Rev 11-15-19)

- Seventh vial – it is done, earthquake, great hail.

[1] “It is done [ginomai- done, cause to be]” “it is finished [teleo- complete, accomplish]” (John 19:30)

[2] Earthquake = covenantal shake up – Heb 12:25-29, Hag 2:6, Ex 19:18.

[3] Great city = OT Jerusalem, divided into three parts:

And you, son of man, take you a sharp knife, take you a barber’s razor, and cause it to pass upon your head and upon your beard: then take you balances to weigh, and divide the hair. 2 You shall burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and you shalt take a third part, and smite about it with a knife: and a third part you shall scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them. […] 5  This says the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her. 6 And she has changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them. 7 Therefore this says the Lord GOD; Because you multiplied more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my judgments, neither have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you; 8 Therefore this says the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, am against you, and will execute judgments in the midst of you in the sight of the nations. 9 And I will do in you that which I have not done, and whereunto I will not do any more the like, because of all your abominations. 10 Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of you, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in you, and the whole remnant of you will I scatter into all the winds. 11 Wherefore, as I live, says the Lord GOD; Surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things, and with all your abominations, therefore will I also diminish you; neither shall my eye spare, neither will I have any pity. 12 A third part of you shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of you: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about you; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them. (Ezek 5:1-12)

- “the cities of the nations [ethnos] fell” – The great city (Jerusalem) is again contrasted with “the cities of the nations”.

- “great Babylon came in remembrance … the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath” the roles are reversed, “the great city”- Jerusalem has become pagan “Babylon”.

[4] Islands and mountains flee – decreation imagery like in chapter six.

- “great hail out of heaven” – Egypt’s seventh plague (Ex 9:18-26)

- “O great hailstones, shall fall;” “great hailstones in my fury to consume it” (Ezek 13:1-16) (Against Israel)
