God Gives the Increase- Introduction

by Brett Jacobsen

This twelve part video series is a call back to Jesus’ doctrine regarding the increase of His Kingdom. It is a re-examination of what the Bible teaches on evangelism and discipleship rather than man’s megre methods.

Introduction

Below are the notes from this teaching so you can read along:

This teaching is about the process of salvation and our involvement.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government [misrah] shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government [misrah – empire, kingdom] and peace there shall be no end [qets – border, finite], upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom [mamlakah - dominion, the estate (rule), king's, reign], to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Is 9:6-7)

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to me. This he said, signifying what death he should die. (John 12:32-33)

Wherefore take to you the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins [osphus -  procreative ability] girt about with truth, (Eph 6:13-14)

 Jesus teaching the Kingdom?

What Jesus taught in the boat - Evangelism seminar:

And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow(Mark 4:1-12)

Luke’s account was probably the same incident. If not, it is more than likely that He was teaching the same Kingdom parables.

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,2  And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.3  And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.4  Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught [catch].5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.6  And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.7  And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. (Luke 5:1-8)

Jesus gave a teaching then a visual on the same subject.

Three main analogies that Jesus used to teach evangelism - Farming, fishing & building

Luke 8 & Matt 13 are other instances where Jesus taught this; He taught this a lot.

After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias;(1)and on this wise showed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, I go a fishing. They say to him, We also go with you. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, Children, have you any meat? They answered him, No. And he said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat to him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. (John 21:1-8)

(1) It is likely that this was the very same location (if not, very close by) that Jesus first taught them by the sea before telling them to “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a haul” (Luke 5, Mark 4). The sea of Galilee was also called ‘the Lake of Gennesaret’, ‘the Sea of Tiberias’, and ‘the sea of Chinnereth’. Perhaps Luke called it the lake of Gennesaret while John called it the sea of Tiberiasbecause in Luke’s account Jesus was near Gennesaret while John’s account had Him nearer to Tiberias (about ten klms apart). Or, more likely in my estimation, Luke and John, like many others in that time, were referring to the same body of water, each according to his own preferred name. Again, it is likely that Jesus met them at a similar location.
